After flashing the V1.1 image to the SD card, the resolution of the desktop was wrong and could also not been set to the correct value (1024x600). To fix it, I had to manually modify /boot/config.txt

Specifically commenting out hdmi_mode and adding hdmi_cvt. The final part of the config looks like this:

# uncomment to force a specific HDMI mode (this will force VGA)
hdmi_group=2
#hdmi_mode=85
hdmi_cvt=1024 600 60 3 0 0 0

The new image should be uploaded today.
